How to Throw a Twin Peaks Viewing Party – or Any Viewing Party!

Marathoning a TV series on Netflix is a lot like being in a relationship. You eye it from afar because it looks good, but are afraid to take the plunge because of time and effort. But then you’re in it and you love it. Then it’s over and you feel empty.

That’s why I love viewing parties – it’s a group experience! You may not get through the whole season, but you can try. And while you do,  you’re surrounded by good food and fellow enthusiasts. It’s like a book club, but one where everyone actually reads the book and isn’t frequented by women that call wine “Mommy Juice.”

Use famous quotes from the show, such as the above. Agent Cooper loved nothing more than a good cup of coffee.

Waves of happy rapture rippled throughout the country when news got out that Twin Peaks was on Netflix. A viewing party was necessary!

Rules for a viewing party:

1) Serve food that’s relevant to the theme of the show. Twin Peaks was awash with doughnuts, cherry pie and fresh hot coffee, so that’s what we served. Of course, les bon vivants go all out, so I treated guests to a square meal. We had “Double R Diner Fried Chicken” and a kale dish called, “Who Kaled Laura Palmer?”

2) Surprise guests by answering the door dressed as a character from the show. I didn’t have the time or energy to look as hot as Audrey Horne, so I opted for The Log Lady – simple and creepy! You can encourage guests to dress as their favorite characters too.

3) Always have popcorn – keep it traditional!

4) Have trivia questions about the series prepared for guests. Whoever gets the most correct answers shall receive a gift. For instance if you had an Orange is the New Black viewing party, furry handcuffs would be an excellent tie-in for the die hard fan.

5) Any little thing you can do to re-create the atmosphere of the show will go a long way. Twin Peaks was set in the Pacific Northwest, and many scenes took place at The Great Northern, so I fashioned our home after that. I created a welcome sign with Douglas firs, and the spread showcased logs and branches with birds on them, since there was a lumber mill and creepy owls on the show.

6) Keep it dark in your place – talking will always happen but at least with the lights low, viewers can get lost in the series they love and remember why they came.

7) A little party favor wraps a perfect bow around the evening. Viewing parties tend to be smaller, so it wouldn’t be too time-consuming to put something together. For instance, at a Twin Peaks viewing party you can distribute individually-wrapped doughnuts or coffee mugs filled with a high-end coffee packet.

8) Always have extra pillows and blankets on hand, for attendees that are in it for the long haul. You want them to feel welcome in your home, so keep them warm and comfortable.

Southern-Themed Oyster Roast

Buying a home is always cause for celebration. We fell in love with our 1925 craftsman, complete with indoor columns, chandeliers, stained glass windows and crown molding. But we needed to baptize our home, so we threw the doors open and invited our friends and neighbors in to eat, drink and poke around.

Bushels of oysters were roasted on our backyard grill

We wanted our party to reflect where we came from, Los Angeles. But we realized that California cuisine is a bit vague. Some say it’s Asian fusion. Others say it’s regular food with alfalfa sprouts and avocado slapped onto it. In reality, it’s Mexican food.

Instead, we opted for an old-fashioned oyster roast, and Southern comfort food – a nod to our genteel future.

Guests were invited to mill about the home, peeking in closets and bouncing on beds. One adult even volunteered to give kids a tour of the old, mysterious attic.

Keeping with the Southern theme, I served mint juleps with fresh mint leaves from the yard. To make it easy on guests, I made a huge vat of the cocktail ahead of time. That way, guests could simply pour. Plus, I could regulate how strong the drinks were. I always set my cocktails to strong. It keeps people social and really, only the first few sips burn. For the teetotalers, I brewed sweet tea, of course!

Blues and jazz guitar played over the stereo and rooms were lit with candles in Mason jars. Since we’re newcomers to Richmond, we placed a suggestion box on a table, urging guests to recommend restaurants to try, fun weekend road trips, etc.

Adventurous friends gathered around the bar to do raw oyster shots with tequila and cocktail sauce. Every time a fresh batch of roasted oysters were brought in from the grill, friends circled the table. We had a few dipping sauces for guests, like chopped parsley and garlic in butter sauce, and of course lemon slices and Tabasco for purists.

Last but not least, I made sure our friends didn’t go home empty-handed. Especially since so many were kind enough to bring housewarming presents. I made small batches of rosemary popcorn, fresh from our backyard rosemary bush. Stuffed into quaint brown paper bags with a Southern-style label, these awaited guests on the front porch on their way out.

This party felt like a warm hug, and was the perfect way to kick off our new life in Richmond.

Partygoers Fall Down the Rabbit Hole in Laurel Canyon

Laurel Canyon is legendary.

Books and films have covered the infamous parties, rock stars and tragedies that gave this Los Angeles mecca its reputation. But even before the 1960s, I bet there was always that ethereal, mysterious feeling among the cabins shrouded by eucalyptus trees and coyotes howling through the night.

Ariel Sands threw a knockout Alice in Wonderland-themed bash, turning her Laurel Canyon abode into The Rabbit Hole. The spread included mystery potions that guests were encouraged to drink. And if visitors dared to show up sans costume, they were given sandwich boards to wear, resembling a deck of cards.

What Los Angeles neighborhood could have been better suited for this psychedelic fete?
